Stopping smoking may seem like a huge and daunting task, especially if you’ve made a long term habit of it! Thankfully, there are now a number of great support resources that smokers can use to help with quitting.
Here at the pharmacy we are able to give you face-to-face advice, and talk to you about why stopping smoking is a good idea. We are able to provide you with the important support and encouragement necessary to help you on your journey to better health. We can even offer you carbon monoxide testing and ongoing one-on-one consultations to keep you on track.
Whether you choose to start with ‘Stoptober’, kick the habit at the turn of the year on January 1st or want to start tomorrow, we have stop smoking treatments to make it that little bit easier. The type of treatment that you go for will depend entirely on personal preference, plus factors like age, medical conditions or pregnancy, and here in the pharmacy we can talk you through each of these options.
Nicotine is the addictive substance in tobacco that causes people to develop a smoking habit. It is possible to satisfy this need for nicotine whilst avoiding the tar, carbon monoxide and dangerous chemicals in cigarette smoke by using nicotine replacement therapy (NRT).
NRT is available in multiple forms, such as patches, chewing gum, inhalators, tablets and sprays. It is recommended that when stopping smoking you use a combination of these products over the course of 8 to 12 weeks, before reducing the dose and stopping completely.
There are also medications that can help reduce nicotine cravings and decrease the desire to smoke, however these methods need to be prescribed by a GP. Here at the pharmacy we are always happy to talk you through each option, and find what is best for you.
Another method which has been proven to help with giving up smoking is e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes deliver a dose of nicotine through vapour, without the tar and carbon monoxide found in real cigarettes. You can purchase these in lots of shops and they do not need a prescription, however we would recommend that you also try one of the NRT methods alongside using an e-cigarette.
We will help you every step of the way, so that even when you finally stop smoking completely we can support you in preventing a relapse. We can also recommend NHS Stop Smoking Services to assist you in the long term, including group meetings and helplines.
If you want to stop smoking, pop in and see us today! It’s never too soon to kick the habit, and we’d be pleased to help you change your life and health for the better.
